We focus primarily on increasing early literacy and high school success. Additional priorities include, improving school quality and ensuring adequate funding spent wisely.

The Position

Your role stands at the intersection of organizing and the fight to change the odds for low-income children and families. Stand for Children seeks a dynamic and hard-working Greater Boston Statewide Organizer to empower and mobilize our grassroots stakeholders to take state action in support of students. The State Organizer will contribute to a national effort to take our organizing to the next level of scale and impact. As part of the Statewide Organizing Team, the Statewide Organizer will ensure we have a solid ongoing presence in targeted locations to impact state policy decisions and elections and, where strategic to our state work, local policy decisions and elections.


The Greater Boston Statewide Organizer will report to the State Organizing Director and potentially manage part-time Outreach Coordinators as well as Team Captains/Leaders. The Greater Boston Statewide Organizer will hold Outreach Coordinators, Team Captains and Team Leaders accountable for meeting metrics-based goals and ensure that they have the coaching, training, and support they need to build robust teams.





  • Build a strong membership base of volunteer teams and move people up the ladder of engagement

    • Identify, recruit, develop, coach and manage Supporters, Members, Team Leaders and Team Captains.
    • Support the development of leadership and advocacy skills for Team Captains/Leaders and their teams by providing ongoing coaching and trainings that enable supporters and members to assume more responsibility as they move up the ladder of engagement.
    • Support and hold Team Captains/Leaders accountable for building, managing, and maintaining a consistent and large pool of supporters who are committed to being engaged and acting at the state level, and who are being consistently and intentionally moved up the ladder of engagement from Supporter to Member to Leader.
    • Support, manage and hold Leaders accountable for reaching goals in school-based team building and membership recruitment.
    • Engage communities and build a robust pipeline through an array of tactics, including, but not limited to, referrals, parent lists from partner schools, pledge drives, door-to-door canvassing, phone banking, events and workshops.
    • Schedule quality external meetings with parents, school staff, community leaders, partners and others that meaningfully contribute to building capacity at the state level.
    • Deliver presentations, facilitate workshops and organize events designed to bring people in the door to Stand. Programming will be tied primarily to: literacy or high school success at the school level.  Other campaign work will be connected to elections and/or ballot initiatives.
    • Organizers will manage the day-to-day relationships with schools that we partner with – meeting with principals, helping to set the programming schedule, ensuring that there is strong partnership with the school on recruitment and turnout to any programming.


    Engage and develop Outreach Coordinators

    • Identify, recruit, develop, coach and manage Outreach Coordinators. Outreach Coordinators are part-time staff that are responsible for building, planning and delivering programmatic workshops and events at their assigned school(s).
    • Participate in the interview, testing, hiring and onboarding of any Part-Time Outreach Coordinator roles.
    • Set clear goals and expectations, hold Outreach Coordinators accountable to metrics and goals through weekly check-ins, and by supporting, coaching and managing them for success.
    • Work with Outreach Coordinators and parents to set goals around growth, action, and engagement, coaching them to successfully meet those goals.
    • Ensure Outreach Coordinators and teams are educated and empowered to act on statewide campaigns and can speak confidently about the campaigns to community members and decision makers. Campaigns can include not only the work around literacy and high school success at the school level, but state legislative races, statewide races, and ballot initiatives as opportunities arise.
    • Help manage and execute the state field plan.


  • Passionate and unwavering belief in Stand for Children’s mission and strategy to ensure that all children, regardless of background, graduate from high school with college education preferred;
  • Requires 4 - 6 years of professional experience, including at least 2 years political or community organizing work; Experience managing staff and/or volunteers
  • Experience recruiting, training, and mobilizing a team of 50 or more volunteers/members preferred;
  • Strong community ties
  • Experience delivering presentations as well as successfully facilitating pre-designed curriculum to small and mid-size groups of adults;
  • Experience working with diverse and bilingual populations strongly encouraged; Spanish language efficiency strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to achieve measurable, meaningful results in a fast-paced environment;
  • Passion for developing parents and other adults to realize their potential, as a critical step to improving education for children;
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and team-building skills; ability to initiate, foster, and leverage contacts and networks to achieve strong, positive outcomes;
  • Ability to be flexible and steadfast in the face of ambiguity; self-motivated problem-solver and critical thinker;
  • A learning orientation and an ability to embrace and incorporate direct feedback crucial;
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings and occasional weekends; full-time access to a car;
  • Ability to be in multiple locations during a given day, the ability to transport items, and the ability to set up and take down meeting equipment (chairs, tables, projectors, screens, etc.); May require the ability to climb stairs;

  • Knowledge of issues related/important to low- and moderate-income families.
  • Respect for economic and cultural diversity, experience working with diverse groups of people.


Stand for Children consists of two separate entities. Stand for Children, Inc., a grassroots membership organization is exempt under section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code, and Stand for Children Leadership Center, a leadership development organization is exempt under section 501(c)(3)
